[Multi-word verbs] Type 3: Phrasal-prepositional verbs

「多字動詞Multi-word verbs」相當常用,尤其在口語表達的使用更是頻繁,此類動詞在英文溝通時是非常重要的一環。「多字動詞Multi-word verbs」共分為三種,一起來看看本篇介紹的「Phrasal-prepositional verbs片語介系詞動詞」重要規則吧!

1. 片語介系詞動詞是由"動詞"、"副詞"和"介系詞"所組成。

Phrasal-prepositional verbs have three parts: a verb, a particle and a preposition. The particle and the preposition cannot be separated. Many of these verbs are often used in informal contexts, and their meaning is difficult to guess from their individual parts.

  • catch up with
  • get on with
  • look out for
  • come up against
  • listen out for
  • look up to
  • do away with
  • look down on
  • put up with
  • face up to
  • ook forward to
  • watch out for
  • get away with
  • look in on
例句:
  • Ken’s just chatting to a friend. He’ll catch up with us in a minute. (reach, join)
  • Do you get on with your neighbors? (have a good relationship with)
  • We look forward to meeting you on the 22nd. (anticipate with pleasure)

2. 大部份的”受詞”通常接在”片語介系詞動詞”之後

The object (underlined below) always comes immediately after the preposition, and not in any other position.

例句:
  • She was a wonderful teacher. We all looked up to her. (respected)

3. 少部份”片語介系詞動詞”會在”介系詞”之前放”直接受詞”

Some phrasal-prepositional verbs also take a direct object after the verb as well as an object of the preposition:

  • fix … up with
  • put … down to
  • put … up to
  • let … in on
  • take … out on
  • look up to
  • do away with
  • look down on
  • put up with
  • face up to
  • look forward to
  • watch out for
  • get away with
  • look in on
例句:
  • She fixed us up with a violin teacher. We're really grateful to her. (fixed us up with = arranged for us)
  • We just put the accident down to bad luck; there's no other reason. (put down to = think the cause or reason is)
